  91.       The overall best unit is the NEC 3D.  It is very sharp in
  92. all resolutions, can memorize your screen size and will end the
  93. clutter of equipment on the desk.  It will also end your wallet,
  94. too.  $600.00.
  95.       A great paper-white monochrome monitor is the NEC GS2A.  I
  96. find it better than the Atari monochrome monitor and it costs
  97. about $50.00 more.  For everybody BUT Atari STs, it is a
  98. gray-scale multisync.  Atari's video does not support
  99. gray-scale.  This monitor would be suitable only as replacement
  100. for the Atari monochrome.  Norm Weinress, of O.P.I., the company
  101. that makes the D.E.K.A. keyboard adaptor for the ST is
  102. developing a gray scale card.  He can be found on GEnie and on
  103. Delphi.  Oh, the cost for the GS2A is about $225.00.

  136. Notes is now the best Atari mag around, bar none.  I quite agree.  Here is the

  142. My opinion of this magazine, unlike Mr. Howard's, isn't exactly unbiased.  I
  143. devote an average of 25 hours/week of my personal time to CN, with no pay.
  144.      I'm the 8-bit Editor, but I also own a 1040STe.
  145.      Which just goes to show money isn't everything.  Quality flows when you
  146. have motivated people.  STart/ANTIC, recently demised, never rose above med-
  147. iocrity.  CN has always had a hard core of followers who know TRUTH when they
  148. read it (we spare no one), who keep coming back for more.  As long as anyone
  149. is interested in an atari computer, we will be there.
  150.      I don't give away 100hrs/month of my time for nothing.

  165. Well it's been over a year since I've updated the copies of Beep, Digitial
  166. Keyclick, Digivec, Play, etc. at atari.archive, so I've made a new archive
  167. which contains the latest versions of all these and more.

  185. The most notable improvment in the AUTO folder programs is support for

  188. have been made much more robust since the first versions.

  190. Note that all are FREE except for Digital Keyclick, which is
  191. SHAREWARE.  If you like any of the programs, please send in the $15

  221. I'm not trying to start a falme war or anything but I need to know which lharc
  222. will work with these 2 files:

  227. I have lharc 0.51 it extracts the files and gives me one unamed file but no
  228. real files.  While running, it says each individual file exists but it does
  229. appear to extract them.  But when it is done I just get this one unnamed file.

  232. would be most helpful and appreciated.

  263. I have an old (very old: alpha version from 
  264. I like it and the built in emacs but it has bugs particularly in its
  265. memory management.  Is there a more recent version or is there another
  266. program that does a similar thing and includes emacs?  I've heard of
  267. something called okami (sp?); what is it like.  I don't have access
  268. to any of the archives (I've tried and tried) so is anybody willing to
  269. mail me a copy of a newer gulam or something better?

  351. That is true, although the mono is a bit grainy on the two such units I have
  352. seen.  It has been posted that will a high grade Multisync this is not true,
  353. but I have not seen this.

  361. Yes, it does matter.  There are some specs that the monitor must meet.  I
  362. suggest that you call Toad Computers (1-800-544-6923) and ask them.  They have
  363. introduced a monitor-switchbox/multisync adaptor box themselves (in
  364. this months issue of Current Notes) which costs $59 ($39 for monitor switching
  365. only).  They should know the specs you need.

  425. of mech and controller did you use?  What software?

  429. I have a ICD Advantage Plus controller hooked to a Syquest 555 and a
  430. Seagate ST296N.  I am wondering what kind of tape backup I could add in
  431. to the system.  I also need to know what software (besides the ICD FaST
  432. software) will support tape backup on the ST.

  467. Personally I object to the current new-look being written for 10 year olds
  468. by (seemingly) 10 year olds - a picture of Bart Simpson on the front of a
  469. recent edition says it all, I think.
  470. Hopefully the writing style and coverage, will change for the better (and
  471. elder!), but I guess not.
  472.     Still none of the ads. in it are mentioning Mega STEs for sale - anyone
  473. in the UK got one yet, and if so, for how much?

  489. I have heard ENOUGH!  I don't see why everyone has problems with LZH and
  490. LHarc..  All you need to do is use UNLZH 1.72 and all your files will be
  491. unlzh'd easily and painlessly!  It uses a nice GEM interface and I have
  492. had *no* problems with it.
  493.  
  494. I use DC Utilities' DC Xtract 2.0 to LZH files.  Before I upload them, I
  495.  
  496. "test" the archive for errors.  Once in a while the file fails the CRC check,
  497. but when it passes 95% of the time, I proceed to upload it.
  498.  
  499. If you do the above -- use UNLZH 1.72 to unlzh, then use a LZH'r which can
  500. test LZHives -- you will have no problems whatsoever.  However, there is no
  501. way you can get around bad LZH files someone else may have uploaded.  WE
  502. just need to encourage everyone to test their LZH'd files; otherwise, use
  503. ARC.

  531. a few years ago that there were a couple models which plug into the
  532. cartridge port. I would like a mic jack as well as normal audio input

  575. I don't believe WP uses gdos fonts, so I was wondering if any
  576. of the font manipulators out there will allow you to use
  577. different fonts with WP for the ST?  I'd even be interested if
  578. a program allows you to replace the system font...as long as
  579. WP doesn't simply override that and return to the original
  580. system font when it loads.
  581. Does anybody have any ideas?

  603. A couple of years ago I needed some special characters in a document I
  604. was working on.  I tried replacing the system font using font.ttp, and
  605. also some accessory that does a similar trick (the name escapes me
  606. right now), but in each case WP just reverted to using the normal
  607. system font.  I know that my new font was resident, because when I
  608. called up the Alt/Ctl key mapping screen, the table of characters at
  609. the bottom was displayed using the new font; but for some reason WP
  610. would only display the normal system font on the document screen.
  611.  
  612. I called WPCorp to find out whether they had hard-coded the address of
  613. the ROM character tables into the program, or whether the program uses
  614. its own built-in display font (which just happens to be identical to
  615. the system font).  The ST Support person didn't want to tell me much
  616. (it seems that WPCorp takes a dim view of people hacking on their
  617. executables), but did finally hint that the program uses its own
  618. fonts.  So I went searching through the program with a binary editor,
  619. thinking that I would find the character tables and modify them
  620. directly.  But I wasn't able to locate them. :-(  Truth to be told, I
  621. don't even know exactly what to look for.

  623. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be forever grateful, as I'm sure
  624. would Gerry and others who would like to see some different characters
  625. in their WP documents.

  643. the printer has available (I have a VERY OLD Okidata and I have no font
  644. options...)
